A week ago Thursday, I was sitting watching the Dodgers-Cubs game with my mom. We got to talking about who we thought would be in the playoffs and who we wanted to win the World Series.
I am a Mets and Red Sox fan (the Mets are killing me this year!), so naturally I want the Red Sox to win the AL Wild Card and get into the playoffs. Right now that's looking pretty good, with the Red Sox leading the Rangers by 2.5 games. (Given the Yankees are 6.5 games ahead of the Red Sox, it's sadly not likely that the Red Sox can win the AL East outright.) But after getting to the playoffs, I am kind of torn as to who I should root for.
Anyone who is a baseball fan is probably aware of the way that the in which Joe Torre left the Yankees at the end of the 2007 season. Quick recap: Joe Torre managed the Yankees for 12 seasons, made it to the playoffs every one of those seasons, and winning four World Series championships. In 2007, after the Indians had beat the Yankees in the first two games of the first-round of the playoffs, George Steinbrenner said that if the Yankees did not win the following game, Torre's contract would not be renewed. The Yankees won that game, but lost the next game, resulting in the Yankees losing the series and ending their playoff bid. Steinbrenner eventually offered Torre a $5 million, one-year contract, with three $1 million incentive bonuses if the Yankees won the American League Divisional Series, the American League Championship Series, and the World Series. This contract represented a pay cut for Torre, and many regarded the offer as an insult - particularly the incentive bonuses. Torre did not sign the contract, and 2007 was Torre's last season with the Yankees.
After Torre left the Yankees, he became the manager for the Dodgers beginning with the 2008 season. That year, despite a rocky start and lots of team injuries, the Dodgers made it to the postseason, but did not make it to the World Series. This year, the Dodgers are leading the National League West division, and seem almost guaranteed to make it to the postseason.
And here's where I reach my quandary. I stated previously that I am a Mets and Red Sox fan, so it should go without saying that I am also an anti-Yankees fan. As a Red Sox fan, I would LOVE for the Red Sox to win the American League Championship series over the Yankees and go to the World Series. But after the way Torre was treated by Steinbrenner in 2007, I think it would be poetic justice if the Dodgers faced off with and defeated the Yankees in the World Series. So which scenario should I root for?
So here's the scenario I have decided to root for the playoffs and the World Series:
There is NO way I can root for the Yankees to win over the Red Sox in the playoffs - I think I'd puke first. So I am rooting for the Red Sox to win the American League Championships and go to the World Series. And I will root for the Dodgers to win the National League Championships and go to the World Series. And the Yankees can watch both Joe Torre and the Red Sox go to the World Series while they stay home. Then I will root for the Red Sox to win the World Series again - because how can I not root for my Red Sox? :o)
