U.S. opens food safety office in China after scares - CNN.com

The first foreign office of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration opened Wednesday in Beijing after an influx of contaminated Chinese food and drug imports to the United States.

The FDA said it also planned to open offices in the Chinese cities of Guangzhou and Shanghai in the next few days. Subsequent locations would include India, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe.

FDA employees would inspect products and liaise with Chinese officials and groups, the agency said.

The United States intends to help the Chinese government improve its regulatory systems for exports, according to a recent statement from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the FDA's umbrella agency.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I hope this helps the food quality issues in China, both here and in China.  Contaminated milk killing babies in China - there is no excuse for that kind of thing happening in this day and age.  And I don't remember the last time I bought seafood that came from China - I refuse to buy it because I know it can't be relied on to be safe.  But in light of the food contamination issues we faced here this summer, how effective will the FDA really be?
